The Stage is Set

When the curtain rises at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts this season, the spotlight will shine on more than an impressive roster of celebrities thanks to a recently completed $16 million renovation. The star of the Center's elegant new look and feel is the high-tech Virginia G. Piper Theater, which features 852 plush new seats, improved sightlines, state-of-the-art acoustics and lighting, and an intimate atmosphere that allows audience members to sit closer to the stage. Outside the theater, the newly christened Dayton Fowler Grafman Atrium boasts a redesigned, permanent box office area, a café managed by Arcadia Farms, and a radiant public art installation by artist Kana Tanaka that features more than 100 blown-glass pieces illuminated with fiber-optic lighting.

On stage, the Center’s 2009-10 season will offer the best of dance, jazz, classical and world music, theater and satire, including performances by comedians Jason Alexander, John Cleese and Martin Short; the groundbreaking Martha Graham Dance Company; Grammy Award-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma; the dynamic Shen Wei Dance Arts as part of the new Destination China series; and jazz legend Arturo Sandoval, who headlines the first Scottsdale Latin Jazz Festival.
