Paint has long had a special allure for artists—its rich viscosity, its nearly primal dynamic nature. On view in this installation are works that exemplify the ways painters “push paint around” with finesse, struggle and juicy experimentation.

Addl. Info: Garcia, who works as a steward for the property, came to Phoenix in 1999 after seeking political exile from Cuba. Displacement has made him more aware of his cultural heritage which he depicts in his work in a style called, “cubanidad.”
Rich in color and complex in theme, Garcia-Miranda’s paintings embody the tales of the Cuban countryside, brining to visual representation fables and stories of cagüeiros (sorcerers who become animals), and güijes (Cuban goblins). His work is saturated with the exuberance of the tropics as his vibrant use of color may be read as visual representations of poly-rhythmic Cuban music, also conveying the forceful light of the Caribbean meridian.

Hotel Valley Ho, one of the best known mid-century modern hotels in the country, will offer an architectural walking tour of the buildings and grounds beginning in October.
Addl. Info: The twice-weekly tours explore the classic design elements of the hotel while sharing the history and legends associated with its famous Hollywood guests.
Led by experts from Scottsdale’s Ultimate Art & Cultural Tours, the walks give an historical perspective to the mid-century modern design of the Hotel Valley Ho, which opened in 1956. The project architect, Edward L. Varney incorporated intelligent, minimalist design with some of Wright’s signature elements in creating this Arizona landmark.
Over the years Hotel Valley Ho was the resting spot for Hollywood stars visiting Arizona including Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn Monroe, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis. The hotel also was the location for teenage heartthrobs Robert Wagner and Natalie Woods’ 1957 wedding reception.
Hotel Valley Ho was saved from the wrecking ball in 2003, and now stands as a landmark structure in downtown Scottsdale. The 45 min-1 hour walks will be available on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
