The Green Seal of Approval

Jim Hollister
General Manager, Kimpton's FireSky Resort & Spa

Each year, Experience Scottsdale profiles a selection of local celebrities, from restaurateurs and sports figures to artists and adventurers. We invite you to meet this year’s luminaries and find out what they have to say about living, working and enjoying life in Scottsdale.

In March 2010, Kimpton’s FireSky Resort & Spa made a huge splash on the sustainability scene when it became the first Arizona property to receive the coveted Green Seal certification. And no one is more excited about the honor than FireSky General Manager Jim Hollister. “Getting the Green Seal certification was an intense process, but it’s been incredibly rewarding.”

The certification wasn’t FireSky’s first foray into sustainability. As a Kimpton property, the resort already followed the company’s 80 Earth Care practices. Green Seal certification was the natural evolution of a successful sustainability program that provides a seamless experience for eco-minded guests.

“All our rooms have separate receptacles for trash and recycling,” says Hollister. “But our efforts go as far as lighting, landscaping, heating and cooling, and composting leftover food.” According to Hollister, one of the most talked-about measures taken at FireSky involves empty wine bottles. “All our empty wine bottles are sent to a local company called Refresh Glass where they’re recycled to make our water glasses.”

Hollister credits the program’s success to his team of passionate employees. “Being the first resort in the state to obtain the Green Seal certification, with all the magnificent properties that are here, makes me really proud.”
