The works included in SMoCA's exhibition feature unexpected, light-hearted renderings of the artist's studio, quirky narratives and an array of animals that offer an unusual window into this important conceptual artist's playful and questioning thinking. SMoCA visitors will have the opportunity to experience Cave's visionary "Soundsuits" -multi-layered mixed-media, wearable sculptures named for the sounds made when worn that explore themes of costuming, masquerading, and identity-altering power. Reminiscent of African and religious ceremonial garb as well as haute couture, they are made using scavenged ordinary materials including fabrics, beads, sequins, old bottle caps, vintage doilies, rusted iron, sticks, twigs, leaves and hair, which Cave re-contextualizes into visionary masterpieces. Mad, humorous, elaborate, grotesque, glamorous and unexpected, Cave's work explores issues of ceremony, ritual, myth and identity through a layering of concepts.
