A Taste of the West

Susan & Ron Anderson
Partners, Rusty Spur Saloon

Each year, Experience Scottsdale profiles a selection of local celebrities, from restaurateurs and sports figures to artists and adventurers. We invite you to meet this year’s luminaries and find out what they have to say about living, working and enjoying life in Scottsdale.

Tucked along downtown’s Main Street is a local legend that blends great food and live entertainment with a hearty helping of Old West hospitality and charm. Renowned as Scottsdale’s last real cowboy saloon, the Rusty Spur is poised to celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2011. Ron and Susan Anderson, the Spur’s owners since 2002, couldn’t be more excited.

“For me, owning the Spur is a dream job,” says Susan. “People from all over the world come in here to get a taste of a real cowboy bar. We just love seeing them come in, relax and enjoy themselves.”

Generously decorated with Western memorabilia and thousands of dollar bills that are donated annually to local charities, the Spur offers live music seven days and nights a week, 364 days a year courtesy of the Psychobilly Rodeo Band and other talented musicians.

“Plus, the building itself has an interesting history,” explains Ron. “It opened as Scottsdale’s first bank in 1921, and later served as the Chamber of Commerce, a library and a real estate office.” And the old vault? “That’s where we keep the beer,” says Ron with a laugh.

“People of all ages, from college students to retirees, love to come to the Spur to listen to live music, have a beverage and congregate with the other people,” says Susan. “Scottsdale’s nightlife scene is just filled with enthusiasm, and we’re thrilled to be part of it.”
