The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) is proud to feature the large scale presentation of work by Chicago-based artist Nick Cave titled Meet Me at the Center of the Earth. SMoCA visitors will have the opportunity to experience Cave's visionary "Soundsuits" -multi-layered mixed-media, wearable sculptures named for the sounds made when worn that explore themes of costuming, masquerading, and identity-altering power. Reminiscent of African and religious ceremonial garb as well as haute couture, they are made using scavenged ordinary materials including fabrics, beads, sequins, old bottle caps, vintage doilies, rusted iron, sticks, twigs, leaves and hair, which Cave re-contextualizes into visionary masterpieces. Mad, humorous, elaborate, grotesque, glamorous and unexpected, Cave's work explores issues of ceremony, ritual, myth and identity through a layering of concepts.
Twenty-six paintings and illustrations by artists from the United States, England and Scotland will be showcased.
